Life can feel very noisy sometimes. Between work, family, and everything in between, it’s easy to lose touch with that sense of calm we all need. For many of my clients here in Ennis, sound therapy offers a simple, gentle way to reconnect and reset – both mentally and physically.
But what exactly is sound therapy? And how does it work?
Let me walk you through what I do here at Bare Sound, and why it helps so many people.
The power of vibration
At its core, sound therapy works through vibration. I use a series of specially tuned Tibetan singing bowls which are placed either on or around the body. When played, these bowls produce low, steady vibrations that travel through your body’s tissues, muscles, and nervous system.
Unlike talk therapy or massage, you don’t need to do anything. You simply lie down fully clothed, relax, and let the sound work gently through you.
Calming the nervous system
A lot of the clients I see come in feeling tense, overwhelmed, or simply burnt out.
When we’re stressed, our bodies sit in a constant state of “fight or flight” – heart rate elevated, breathing shallow, muscles tight, mind racing.
The vibrations from the bowls help trigger the parasympathetic nervous system – this is the part of your body responsible for rest, digestion, and repair. It’s what allows your body to feel safe again.
After a session, people often report:
- Feeling deeply relaxed (sometimes even a little sleepy)
- A lightness in their chest or stomach
- Clearer thinking
- Reduced tension in shoulders, jaw, or neck
Some clients say they sleep better for days after a session.
Sound waves and brain waves
Another way sound therapy works is by gently guiding your brain into slower brainwave patterns.
Most of us spend our days in ‘beta’ brainwaves (fast, busy thinking). The bowls help shift you towards alpha and theta brainwaves, which are associated with calm, creativity, and sometimes even meditative or dream-like states.
This is why people often feel mentally clear or refreshed after sound therapy – even if they haven’t consciously done anything during the session.
Emotional release
For some people, sound therapy opens the door to emotional release.
You might find tears well up unexpectedly. Or you may feel a wave of sadness, joy, or even relief move through you during or after the session.
This is very natural. Sound allows your body to gently process emotions that may have been held or stuck. I always tell clients – whatever shows up is welcome. The space is completely private and safe.
Who is it for?
The honest answer? Almost everyone.
I work with:
- Busy professionals juggling work and life pressures
- Parents carrying emotional load and burnout
- People navigating grief, loss or big life transitions
- Those experiencing anxiety or overwhelm
- Anyone simply wanting deep rest and nervous system reset
The beauty of sound therapy is you don’t need any previous experience. No talking, no effort. Just time to lie down and let your body do what it naturally knows how to do – heal.
Is it safe?
Sound therapy is very gentle, but there are a few situations where I may recommend caution or a chat with your doctor first:
- If you have a pacemaker or implanted medical device
- If you’re pregnant (especially first trimester)
- If you have epilepsy or uncontrolled seizures
- If you’re currently undergoing cancer treatment
If you’re ever unsure, feel free to contact me and we’ll have a quick chat before booking.
What to expect in your first session
When you arrive, we’ll have a short chat about how you’re feeling, any physical or emotional tension, and what you’re hoping for.
You’ll lie comfortably on a therapy bed, fully clothed, with pillows and blankets as needed.
I’ll then play the bowls gently around and near your body. Most sessions last around 60 minutes, and you’re welcome to rest quietly afterwards if you need.
Every session is private, one-to-one, and completely tailored to you.
